Germany - Berlin
Next
I passed through Germany twice on my travels. Firstly, I travelled to Berlin on an overnight train from Amsterdam. This picture shows a part of the preserved 800m stretch of the Berlin Wall. It is not easy to find - located between Ostbahnhof station (renamed from Hauptbahnhof again since re-unification) and Warschauer Straße. Most traces of the wall have disappeared, and Berlin seems to be one large building site - everywhere you look, there are cranes on the horizon. There seems to be a conscious effort on the part of the whole city to wipe out any reminders of partition - it seems a bit of a shame that the Berliners feel it necessary to wipe away traces of a whole chunk of their history, but as an outsider it is not really fair to comment. I look forward to returning to Berlin when it is a little warmer!
