The coastal town of Mombasa has a long and varied history as a key trading
port on the Indian Ocean. It reflects this with a high proportion of Moslems
in its population. The weather on the coast tends to be very hot and humid.
Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese during their occupation of the area.
The walls of the fort are designed so that there is no place where the fort
can be attacked which is not overlooked by a rampart on another section
of wall.
There are a number of preserved buildings and a museum inside the fort
compound.
