India - Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
Next
February 2002

One of the many wonderful temples in Varanasi.
This brightly painted display is to be found inside the temple.
Wonderful stone carving of musicians on a pillar of the Jain temple in Varanasi.
Wooden door carvings at the same Jain temple.
This is the altar inside the Buddhist temple at Sarnath, a few miles outside Varanasi. This is one of the most important sites in Buddhism, where Buddha preached the 'Middle Way' to his five disciples.
The walls of the temple are painted with scenes from Buddha's life by a Japanese artist. On the left side of the back wall, it is just possible to make out the white elephant inside the circle, representing the dream sequence of Buddha's mother before he was born.
While in Varanasi, there were elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh. On election day, all shops and businesses close to enable everyone to vote, so the streets are practically deserted. It is important for travellers to plan around this, since getting a taxi or rickshaw before 5pm was impossible that day!
